Koen Vermeylen, Meat and Seafood
Koen was born and raised in Belgium. As a boy in school, he also worked in a meat shop from the time he was twelve and continued working there throughout his school years. He has always liked working in the meat industry, and became very comfortable going to open markets and talking “shop” with more seasoned meat experts. Koen found their information invaluable – he couldn’t absorb enough of it.
At the age of 28 Koen married his wife, Leah, and moved to Coeur d’Alene Idaho. Koen and Leah have 7 children – 4 girls and 3 boys. Koen started out as a meat manager for a larger chain and quickly worked his way up the corporate ladder, then moved his family to Colorado. That is where he began to learn and understand the U.S. meat and seafood markets and industries, as well as the natural and organic component of the business.
After a few years in Colorado, the family moved to Ann Arbor Michigan to work for a smaller family owned Grocery chain, which was a lot of fun and a great experience. When Koen was asked to join the Raley’s Team, he knew this would be the right fit for him and his family, as their core values were very similar.(To request an interview, click here)
